Advertisements for sports drinks have featured world-class athletes such as Michael Jordan and LeBron James. The message is clear: if you want to be a good athlete then you must drink a sports drink. This marketing strategy has worked so far. According to a new study in pediatrics, teenagers these days who are more active in sports and other physical activities are more likely than their less active peers to want to drink a sports drink. While other teens who are less active and watch t.v. a lot are more likely to drink sodas. Consuming sports drinks and other non-carbonated drinks are linked to eating more fruits and vegetables. Especially among girls. Fruit and vegetable counts dropped drastically when the soda consumption rose. These results are shocking. Researchers say that candy colored sports drinks as a healthy alternative to soda. Dehydration is a very common hazard and a very important health issue. Sports drinks may encourage teens to drink more liquids so they wont be dehydrated.
Conclusion
Sports drinks are still bad for you. They may not be as bad as sodas but they still have plenty of sugar in them that is bad for you. A person who bikes for 90 to 180 minutes who drinks water only drinks 50% of it but if you gave the bike rider a sports drink then they drink 90% more of the sports drink then they would water. Researchers have said that the teens who often drink sports drinks that they don't exercise nearly enough to need it to hydrate.
In my opinion, as a football player at gunn and an athlete---While water is really good for you, sports drinks are not necessarily bad for you. When you exercise (or play), your body loses lot more than water and sports drink help replenish what you lose (salt and sugar). So, I am all for sports drinks--GO GATORADE!!
ReplyDeleteP.S: Anything in extreme is hazardous!!
Also being an athlete I believe that sports drinks are not great but they help put important salts and sugars back into your body. I drink sports drinks but with water as well. I will have one cup gatorade and two cups water to help dilute the sugars and salts.
ReplyDeleteSports drinks are neither beneficial nor harmful. if our life is really based on the water and a simple type of food, sports drink or any drinks with sugar is good to fill our body's need of sucrose. However in the ages you can eat and drink what you want, drinking sports drink will not make people any difference in the athletic performance because most of us have already gained the need of sugar.
ReplyDeleteIt is all about balance based on what you drink or eat.
This post does send a clear message that sports drinks are not necessarily healthy, however, I believe that they are not a harmful hazard to teens who play sports. Sports drinks do have a role in replenishing ones dehydration and also energizes a person, therefore leaving a positive role.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad is a nutritionist at Stanford and based on my talks with him, I would concur with this posting and most of what the comments say. If one were to drink 5 sports drinks every day for every year of their life, it would be harmful. A drink a day for several months can hardly have any effect. As to whether they are helpful or not, eating food and drinking liquids provides one with all the vitamins they need and sports drinks will not help someone, besides hydration value, unless they had a deficiency.
ReplyDeleteI agree with many of the postings as well as with your article. I think it is very important to raise awareness for those who drink soda and don't get enough vegetables and fruits. However as an athlete I know first hand that water will no supply the body with the nutrients required for it to maintain its energy throughout workout, and it can cause injury because you can overwork your muscles without replenishing them. So, while it is important that people don't drink it excessively, if you were to do a serious sport, you should definitely have some sort of diluted sports drink to replenish your nutrients.
ReplyDeleteSports drinks are not necessarily bad for you. But too much of them could cause problems later on. They do contain sugar and salts, but they also contain flavoring and coloring which has been chemically engineered from unpronounceable chemicals in a lab. They should not be drunk excessively like instead of milk in your cereal.
