Main Ideas:

There exist an old debate about gay couples and their roles as parents.
It is generally believed that their children might not be able to adjust nor succeed in societies
dominated by traditional families. However,  a Stanford Sociologist,  Michael Rosenfeld  sustains
that children being raised by same-sex couples have nearly the same educational achievement as
children raised by married straight couples.

In his article published on August in the journal Demography, Rosenfeld used  data from the 2000
Census to estimates the rates at which kids raised by gay and heterosexual couples repeated a
grade during elementary or middle school. According to his findings Parents' income and
education are the biggest indicators of a child's success. Children raised by parents who
are the same gender is not in itself any impediment to do well in school.

Conclusion.

This is a relevant article for several reasons. One, it adds new evidence that reliable;
this findings are generalizable for the population since it is based on the US census.
Two, it refutes a popular myth that children raised by same-sex couples cannot adapt
socially compared to a children raised by a traditional family.
Third, I believe it is important to break down stereotypes in society to reduce discrimination
against minority groups, like the gay population.

  1. I'm glad this study was done, as it is showing that gay and hetero couples have few differences. This shows that it doesn't matter *who* raises the child, but *how* the child was raised. There are many children who were raised by hetero couples that can't adapt socially due to the way their parents treated them.

  2. This sort of study is always encouraging. Gays couples should have the same rights as anyone else. I've always found it ridiculous that people think that they are going to 'corrupt' children if given the chance. In fact, I've read other studies that show that kids raised by gay couples are often more tolerate and accepting than other children. And allowing gay marriage actually improves the lives of their children because they live in a more stable environment.
This is a very important article, more people need to be aware of it.

  3. I think this was an important study done to reduce discrimination against gay population. It’s important to recognize that children are affected easily by the way their parents treat them. It also makes it clear that gay couples raising a child does not affect the child’s way of adapting to the environment.

  4. These studies will help to support gay rights, but just a side note, another worry was that had influence was that the children raised by homosexuals would be out casted by the children of traditional couples. This may or may not be an invalid point as homosexuality is becoming more sociably acceptable, and neither is it possible to raise children without having something that others can discriminate against them.

  5. I am glad that the studies found do prove that gay and heterosexual parents have few differences to their influence in a child's education. However, it brings a question as to "why not?" This also proves that the discrimination rate in the U.S. is fairly high.

  6. I found this study very interesting. This opens a passage way towards gays and lesbians being accepted under the law. This study shows that the child's success isn't based on what background does he come from but how his parents influence him.

  7. I think that it's good that statistics and research are overcoming the idea that a homosexual couple cannot raise a child. It really doesn't make sense as gender has nothing to do with the child's success later on. In fact, perhaps their child would simply be more open-minded because they came from such a unique background.

  8. I'm glad that there is finally some solid, statistical evidence as proof of the point that homosexual parents would have no negative impact on their children. It provides an argument beyond just common sense and logic for those who would believe otherwise. Personally I think that two loving homosexual parents could potentially do a much better job of raising a child than two unhappy heterosexual parents. This study is another welcome step on the road to universal understanding that homosexuality is not a blemish on society.

  9. i was always wondering what the outcome would be like if there was a study about this :D. i dont see the reason why people think that just because some people dont have a "traditional family" that they wont do as well. to be honest if we accepted gays way earlier than this lots of people would soon accept that having two gay parents would be normal.

either way if the house is filled with love no matter from 2 gay or straight parents the child will be fine (my personal opinion)
